Summary

Black-eyed Susan is a familiar native wildflower with yellow rays surrounding a dark raised center. It colonizes open soil quickly, flowers early in the life of a planting, and supports pollinators and seed-eating birds. Individual plants may be short-lived, but a patch can persist through self-seeding.

Identification

  • Leaves: Rough, hairy, alternate leaves. Lower leaves are larger and may form a basal rosette; upper leaves are narrower and usually stalkless or nearly so.
  • Stems: Upright, grooved or ridged, and covered with coarse hairs; stems may be simple or moderately branched.
  • Flowers: One showy composite flower head usually sits at the end of a stem, with yellow to orange ray flowers around a dark brown, dome-shaped central disk.
  • Fruit / seed: Small, dry, four-sided achenes mature in the central cone and remain available to birds into fall and winter.
  • Roots: Taproot with smaller fibrous roots; the species persists more through seed than through aggressive rhizomes.
  • Lookalikes: Brown-eyed Susan has more highly branched stems and generally smaller flower heads. Orange coneflower is a longer-lived, clump-forming perennial with less-hairy foliage and more rounded basal leaves. Black-eyed Susan is notably coarse and hairy.

Habitat and Range

Found in prairies, pastures, old fields, roadsides, railroad edges, open woods, slopes, disturbed soil, and recently established native plantings. It is an early-successional species that benefits from openings in the vegetation.

Oklahoma notes: It performs well across much of Oklahoma in sunny, well-drained soil. Flowering can begin in late spring and continue into fall when moisture is available and old flowers are removed.

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Best flowering occurs in full sun, though part shade is tolerated.
  • Soil: Adaptable to clay, loam, or sand with good drainage. Moderate fertility is better than heavy fertilization, which can produce weak growth.
  • Moisture: Water regularly during establishment. Mature plants tolerate moderately dry soil but flower longer with occasional summer moisture.
  • Heat and drought: Tolerates Oklahoma heat and periodic drought after establishment, although prolonged drought shortens the bloom period.
  • Maintenance: Deadhead to extend flowering and limit self-seeding, or leave late seed heads for birds. Thin volunteer seedlings and provide air movement to reduce mildew.

Ecology and Wildlife Value

The flower heads provide pollen and nectar to carpenter bees, leafcutter bees, metallic bees, coneflower-miner bees, butterflies, and other insects. It is a larval host for the silvery checkerspot and wavy-lined emerald. Quail, turkey, goldfinches, and other birds eat the mature seed, making the standing seed heads useful through fall.

Garden Use

  • Best use: Pollinator bed, prairie garden, meadow, roadside-style planting, slope, rain-garden edge, or early cover in a new restoration.
  • Works well with: Little bluestem, prairie dropseed, butterfly milkweed, purple coneflower, bee balm, blazing star, coreopsis, asters, and goldenrods.
  • Problems: Short-lived plants depend on self-seeding. Seedlings can become abundant, and humid, crowded plantings may develop powdery mildew or leaf spots.
  • Recommendation: Grow as an adaptable native wildflower where self-seeding is acceptable. Leave some seed heads for birds and remove extras when the patch spreads beyond its space.

Propagation and Management

Usually propagated by seed. Sow shallowly in fall, winter, or early spring; plants started early may flower during their first growing season. The species freely self-seeds in open soil.

Management notes: Deadhead during summer to prolong bloom, then leave selected late flower heads for birds and reseeding. Thin seedlings where airflow or spacing becomes poor. Mow or cut plants after seed dispersal when managing a meadow, using timing that also protects the rest of the plant community.

Uses and Cautions

  • Edible uses: No casual edible use is recommended.
  • Medicinal uses: Historical Indigenous medicinal preparations have been documented, but these reports do not establish modern safety or effectiveness.
  • Other uses: Pollinator habitat, bird seed, prairie and meadow restoration, cut flowers, naturalized borders, and erosion-control plantings.
  • Hazards: The plant can seed aggressively. Powdery mildew, leaf spot, slugs, and snails are occasional problems.

Notes: Its doing well in the garden where it gets consistent water, the prairie it grows smaller and not as lush. These flowers are beautiful in a native garden, they attract native pollinators and are a part of the prairie ecosystem.
